Famous for the Beach Boys song Little Old Lady from Pasadena and The Pasadena Rose Parade, this LA location is well worth a full day visit. Your first stop should be the Huntington Library & Museum. It’s located on 160 manicured acres and includes one of the finest private libraries in America (at last count there reckon there are about eight million books) that includes a Guttenberg Bible that Henry Huntington bought in 1911 at auction for US$50,000. The rare art collection is also outstanding, as are the Japanese, Chinese and elegant rose gardens.
I also tagged along on a Melting Pot Food Tour of Old Pasadena – This tour explores the charming history, folklore and architecture of Old Pasadena, a National Register Historic District, which was once just a land of orange groves. Colourful alleys, hidden courtyards, and secret thru-ways spice up the tour as you visit ethnic eateries and sweet havens for tastings.
Food Tour dates and times: Year round Saturday and Sunday (except major holidays) from 10:30am-2:00pm; Thursday evenings from 5:30pm-9:00pm (April through October). 3.5 hours – 10 stops (9 with tastings) – 1.25 mile walk. US$57 adults; US$30 children ages 5-12 www.MeltingPotTours.com
