“Star Light, Star Bright, First star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight.”
We’ve all heard the above wish and most of us have uttered it at some stage while staring up at the heavens in wonder as the sky darkened from day to night. Your days of wishing are over and your dreams are about to come true. Let me introduce you to Yonder Star, a luxurious nigh-on 90-foot yacht based in Nelson.
Yonder Star’s history is a story quite her own, beginning back in 1980. She’s even been involved in the movie business when, at the tender age of two, she was converted into a floating film studio. Certain alterations were made to allow the crew to film underwater shots, and the viewing port remains intact, allowing guests onboard a unique perspective of the oceans beneath her hull.
In 2002 she was purchased by her Nelson owners and returned to New Zealand waters – yet more after dinner tales will lead you on an interesting voyage of discovery of her travels through the likes of the Panama Canal, Tahiti and Galapagos Islands, to name a few. ??Completely refitted and painstakingly restored as the team’s vision of a “perfect floating venue” came to fruition. Even before you first step onboard, from the very moment your enquiries begin, you’ll enjoy the rapturous attention of the staff and crew.
Every little attention to detail will be taken care of with almost indecently attentive precision … even so far as to checking on your dietary requirements before you board!
Once onboard, it’s luxury from whoa to go … glittering crystal glasses, fine china dinnerware, sparkling silver cutlery, exquisite linens … and space! The main living area (or saloon, if you’re nautically minded) is air-conditioned, has a fabulous audio system and is spacious enough to cope with formal or casual dining. The kitchen (galley) is well-healed, even by professional culinary standards, allowing all manner of meals to be prepared for her guests. ??In fact, the onboard meals are legendary – the freshest local ingredients are selected in accordance with guests’ dietary requirements, and are accompanied by a selection of the finest local wines.
Below decks, Yonder Star sleeps six in double cabins, all of which are luxurious in their appointments and each boasting its own ensuite. The master stateroom is vast and includes a private seating area. For finer days, the deck is the place to be. The teak decks are uncluttered and the sheltered, extremely comfortable cockpit seating is the perfect spot to enjoy alfresco dining, perhaps staying out there long enough to watch the sun set of an evening, accompanied by music of your choice piped through the outdoor speakers.
The vessel has a hydraulic swim platform at the rear (aft) enabling easy swimming access, and water toys abound in the form of kayaks, wakeboard, sea biscuit, snorkel gear and fishing tackle. If water action isn’t your style, or the weather turns a little cool, grab a book from the library and curl up for some “me time”. You could also challenge your companions to a game of cards or chess in the pilothouse.
Yonder Star’s layout is such that she’s ideal for a variety of purposes. In fact, a quick chat to Carolyn Church and you’ll soon realise that your charter options are only really limited by your imagination when it comes to variations on themes. Each charter is customised to suit, whether it’s a short day trip or a longer overnight cruise.
You might like to take your Board members for a lunch sailing; you could invite select guests onboard to launch a new product line in a distinctly decadent fashion; what about a little team building as you sail across to Abel Tasman or perhaps you have an international client that you’d like to pamper?
Then there’s the romantic aspect: Yonder Star is the perfect setting for an intimate wedding venue where every little detail will be taken into?account leaving you to enjoy your day in complete confidence. And, let’s be honest – you’re going to end up with a very unique photographic account of your day! Then, after the guests have departed, as newlyweds you’ll have the run of the vessel and the most discreet service in town.
Having hosted Hollywood Royalty, I have no doubt you’ll believe you’ve struck the jackpot yourself once you have boarded Yonder Star. I strongly urge you to make your enquiries well before the looming summer season or you’ll be disappointed to learn she’s fully booked.
