Pop goes the Queensland Symphony Orchestra!
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra is set to bring pop culture to the main stage as it explores the music of distant lands through its pop culture orchestral trilogy
5 October The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers in concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra
23 November Video Games Unplugged: Symphony of Legends
8 February Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular
Pop culture aficionados and music lovers alike are invited to join the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s (QSO) fellowship as it embarks on a journey of epic proportions over the coming months, starting off in Middle Earth and trekking through the Halo Universe, before reaching its destination in outer space, all in the name of music.
The adventure will see the QSO bring to life some of the most legendary quests to ever grace the large and small screens, in the form of three extraordinary orchestral events including, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers in concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra on 5 October; Video Games Unplugged: Symphony of Legends on 23 November and the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular on 8 February.
The first installment of the QSO’s pop culture trilogy, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers will see Brisbane’s Riverstage transformed into Middle Earth on Saturday 5 October. Imagine Peter Jackson’s epic film on the big screen with Academy Award® winner Howard Shore’s score performed live by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Justin Freer, with incredible soloist Clara Sanabras and the Brisbane Birralee Voices directed by Julie Christiansen, and Resonance of Birralee directed by Paul Holley in a natural open amphitheatre under the stars on a Spring evening…
Following this unique orchestral-film experience, the QSO will make every gamer’s dreams come true as it performs music from some of the greatest video games ever made at Video Games Unplugged: Symphony of Legends, a concert hosted by gaming funny men Kristofer Straub and Paul Verhoeven on Saturday 23 November. Supporting the music, a massive screen will showcase specially edited and timed visual packages from the games.
The concert will feature live performances of music from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which won more than 200 Game of the Year Awards in 2011, as well as Halo, Uncharted 2 & 3, God of War and the newly released Diablo III. Also included is music from Final Fantasy VII and all new arrangements from BioShock 2, Assassins Creed II, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Secret of Mana, Civilization IV and many more.
In the new year, on 8 February, the QSO will board the TARDIS to bring the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular to Queensland for the very first time; a show based on the world famous recent Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Proms in the UK.
A musical celebration of the iconic BBC series, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular features Murray Gold’s captivating music from the Doctor Who series, accompanied by a big screen featuring specially edited sequences of Matt Smith’s performance as the Eleventh Doctor. A host of 22 monsters including the spine-chilling Silence, the awe-inspiring Daleks, the Cybermen, Silurians, Vampire Girls, Astronaut, Judoon and Oods, as well as two stars of the television series will add to the electric atmosphere.
“We are very excited to offer Queensland audiences such unique and modern orchestral events,” said QSO’s CEO, Sophie Galaise. “Music has the ability to draw people into a story, making them feel as though they are really there which is what we hope to offer audiences through our Special Events, a chance to feel as though they are actually part of their favourite movie or game. I anticipate The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, Video Games Unplugged: Symphony of Legends and the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular to be truly monumental musical moments that we look forward to sharing with Queensland audiences.”
