A new chapter begins…
After nearly 12 months of refurbishment, the “re-born” Tanoa Tusitala Hotel, Apia is once again operating at full steam. Formerly known as The Hotel Kitano Tusitala, affectionately called “Tusitala”, the property was purchased by Tanoa Hotels Group. Mr Y P Reddy, Chairman of the Group, said at the time of the purchase that the Group had been planning a move into Samoa for some time.
‘It is no secret that we have been, for some time now, actively considering having a substantial presence in the Samoan hospitality market which will effectively complement our existing hotel operations in Fiji, New Zealand and Vanuatu and we are delighted with this outcome.’
After purchasing the Kitano Tusitala Hotel last year, The Tanoa Hotel Group closed the doors of the hotel and set upon a major refurbishment program to restore the iconic Apia hotel to its former glory. The hotel rebuilding team has had to endure all that the elements have thrown at them, including the tsunami in September, as well as major fire on site that destroyed much of the refurbishment and all but one of the restored wooden fales.
However, tight planning and control kept things on target. Mr Reddy said ‘You cannot imagine my feelings when I physically watched the fire ravage the public areas of the hotel and then to hear seven days later of the impact of the tsunami it took a great deal of soul searching to carry on. The people and Government of Samoa and members of the wider tourism community urged me to continue.”
And this is exactly what he did, with his team working around the clock to open as quickly as possible.??The multi million dollar reinvestment program has impacted on all operational and public areas. Stage 1 consisted of a full refurbishment of all the accommodation, which includes 48 Double Deluxe Rooms each boasting two double beds, 45 King Deluxe rooms, a Junior Suite featuring a King bed and large living area, and the Presidential with bedroom, living and dining area.
Also included in Stage 1 were the swimming pool and children’s pool, Tamarind Restaurant, the Poolside Bar and a temporary reception area.
Stage 2 of the redevelopment includes additional food and beverage outlets, a Kids club, gymnasium, conference and meeting space, a brand newpermanent reception area and a dedicated spa and health centre are scheduled to open in 2011.
The hotel has now been refurbished to a 4.5 Star international standard. The well appointed guest rooms, all with individually controlled air conditioning, are equipped with all the amenities to suit both the leisure traveller and the busy executive.
The rooms open on to either an airy balcony or self-contained patio area, engendering the feeling of a cool relaxing space – ideal on those hot tropical days! Other features of the rooms include flat screen LCD televisions with cable channels, dual Line IDD telephones, refrigerators, coffee and tea making facilities, in-room safes and a separate business desk with internet access. Electronic key card access ensures a secure environment.
The hotel’s excellent location and proximity to the CBD, as well as its extensive grounds and gardens, are ideal for business and discerning leisure travellers, and the conference facilities make it idea for larger corporate events or weddings. Visitors can avail themselves of 24-hour room service, 24-hour security, on site tennis courts and a baby-sitting service.
