Bookings have just opened for a stylish new eco-friendly beach house in a quiet corner of Kerala, India, from Marari Villas – the pioneer of Boutique Serviced Villas in the region, which combine the privacy of a villa holiday with all the style and service of a boutique hotel. Bougainvillea, on the shores of the Arabian Sea, will open to guests on 1 October.
The chic two-bedroom property is set on a secluded beach at Mararikulam, a fishing village in Central Kerala, far from the tourist crowds, with an authentic and peaceful atmosphere for adults and children alike. Marari Villas has blended modern design and traditional vernacular architecture to offer holidaymakers inspiring indoor-outdoor living, enhanced by sustainable design features, such as electricity and hot water powered by solar systems.
Bougainvillea’s rooms are all sea-facing and have extensive glazing to the west wall for captivating ocean and sunset views. They include two spacious king-size bedrooms, one with the option of twin beds and both with luxury en-suite bathrooms, a relaxing lounge-diner with its own bar and a well-equipped, modern kitchen. There is also a shaded terrace for lounging and dining on, as well as a private courtyard garden with a large daybed surrounded by tropical plants.
At all Marari Villas’ properties, guests are welcomed by the owners Rupert and Olga Evers, who are on hand from the point of booking for help and advice. Visitors also benefit from the services of a dedicated team of villa host, chef, housekeeper and security. The guests’ personal chef can prepare traditional Keralan and Continental breakfasts, as well as lunches and authentic south Indian dinners from the one-week “Kerala Delights Menu”, featuring vegetarian, meat and fish options, such as a traditional Kerala Sadhya Feast on a banana leaf and a delicious seafood barbecue. All meals and candlelit dinners are served in the sea-view lounge or in the private garden.
Facilities at Bougainvillea include free WiFi, satellite TV, DVDs and books, luxury bed linen and bathrobes, bath and beach towels, toiletries, complimentary drinking water/leaf tea/fresh ground coffee, phone/tablet/laptop speakers, safe box, comprehensive visitor guide, beach bag with sun-protection essentials, and free bike hire. The villas are also well-equipped with family-friendly facilities such as travel cots, baby-changing equipment, child car seats, etc. Taxi transfers are available to the airport at Kochi (Cochin), a 90-minute drive.
Marari Villas can help visitors make the most of their time in the area, with a particular focus on experiencing the real Kerala, which is renowned as “easy or light” India. Ayurvedic massages, yoga tuition and cookery classes can be arranged at the villa. Local activities include houseboat cruises on Kerala’s famous backwaters, an elephant encounter on the beach, auto-rickshaw tours of nearby temples, churches and local artisans, and guided trips to nearby Alleppey town and Fort Kochi. Marari Villas partners with other lodgings, such as in Kerala’s hill country, to offer attractive packages for wider exploration of the region. Small group yoga/wellness holidays for up to 12 guests can also be organised.
Bougainvillea is one of four boutique properties created and run by Marari Villas. The others include Palm, a three-bedroom beach house, 100 metres along the sands, and two one-bedroom cottages in the village, Orchid and Hibiscus, with private pools and gardens. Marari Villas has held the number one position on TripAdvisor for accommodation in Marari for the past four years and has held a Certificate of Excellence for the past three years. The business takes its social responsibility seriously and has facilitated a number of projects including new classrooms and toilets for the local tuition centre for 350 children.
